Here’s a great video to pick you up – The Kruger Brothers picking, plucking and strumming through some of their beautiful compositions and arrangements. Formed in Europe by Swiss brothers, Jens and Uwe Krugerformed, the group has been U.S. based for over a decade, and they’re a big deal on the American roots music scene. Listen to this, and you’ll understand why. They’re performing a concert set on Mariposa’s Saturday Evening Main Stage, and will appear in workshops as well. Still looking for a Father’s Day gift? Mariposa Folk Festival tickets are a great option. Purchase online then print or email them to your Dad.
Mariposa Folk Festival is a volunteer-driven event. Without hundreds of people donating their time, there would be no festival.
We are proud of every one of our volunteers. They represent the organization with pride and provide services to the festival audience with enthusiasm, earning a well-deserved reputation for professionalism and civic contribution.
During the three days of the festival, our volunteers put in a minimum of 12 hours service, usually over three shifts. They are also invited to an Orientation and Training Session the evening before the festival starts (Thursday), to meet fellow volunteers on their team as well as their Crew Chief, and to learn what they need to know about the job they will be doing. This session is especially useful to new volunteers, but those that can’t make it the day before the festival, especially the many out-of-town volunteers, get on-the-job training. Volunteers receive free admission to the festival and a souvenir Mariposa Crew T-Shirt as well as a discount on festival camping.
This year, Mariposa is putting on a special ‘thank you’ concert on the Hootenanny Stage from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 4th, for volunteers attending the Volunteer Orientation and Training Session. This pre-festival concert will feature Jory Nash and Richard Knechtel.
Many of our volunteers come from Orillia and area, but a large proportion of them come from across Ontario, and as far away as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lorain, Ohio, and other locales.
Most of the volunteer positions at Mariposa Folk Festival 2013 are filled, but we are still on the look out for good people for our Access Crew. Shifts require walking and standing for long stretches in any weather, and good judgment and problem solving is required. These volunteers work on teams that monitor the festival gates and grounds, and must be 18 years of age or older.
On top of our army of Festival volunteers, Festival Organizing Group volunteers work year round to plan and coordinate the Festival.
All told, our volunteers are an impressive group of great people, and we think it shows in the fantastic festival they put on every year. When you’re at Mariposa Folk Festival 2013, please take a moment to thank some volunteers for their work and contributions.
LA based Family of the Year has vocal harmonies, catchy melodies and velvety sound that evoke the California sunshine. Though young, they play together with veteran confidence and artistry, putting on impressive live shows. They have garnered lots of media attention, receive heavy rotation on French radio, and have earned glowing reviews from the likes of BBC, Rolling Stone and Spin. It’s no mystery why, once you hear them. Just listen to this acoustic version of their song, Hero. Get your tickets for Mariposa Folk Festival today, and see Family of the Year live!
In anticipation of Murray McLauchlan at Mariposa, here’s Whispering Rain
Posted on
He has ten Juno Awards, more than twenty albums, and is one Canada’s most loved songwriters and performers. His tunes are catchy and rich, and an integral part of our collective conscience. He’s a favourite son of Mariposa Folk Festival, and even designed the Lion Face Sun Logo in use today (see above in the masthead of this blog).
This video captures the beautiful, intimate experience of Murray McLauchlan in concert, and it’s a perfect pick for a day that looks like rain. See him live on the Saturday Evening Main Stage at Mariposa Folk Festival 2013.
Festive Creative Design for Mariposa Folk Festival 2013

Here is the dynamic creative design of the promotional materials for Mariposa Folk Festival 2013. This look, created by Effigy Design, appears on the poster, rack cards, print advertisements, and souvenir program. Aspects of it are also carried through to Mariposa’s online presence, and to the t-shirts, compilation CD and other Mariposa merchandise that will be available for purchase in the Emporium at the festival. The ‘look’ of the volunteer t-shirts will also be inspired by this design.
Bahamas Has People Talking, And This Video Shows Why

Have you been hearing the buzz about Bahamas? Not the place, the performer. If not, you need to pay attention to this guy. People are talking about him everywhere, and his audience is growing fast.
Before deciding to go it alone in 2009, Bahamas had been travelling the world and working with some of Canada’s greatest musical exports. He road tested his extraordinary musicianship, honed his craft, and boy, was he ready for his next musical incarnation when the time came. In no time flat he was earning praise for his catchy tunes and great performances from the likes of Spin Magazine, Los Angeles Times, Guardian UK and The New Yorker.
Come to Mariposa Folk Festival to see him live. In the meantime, watch this video of Bahamas performing a full set at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas.

City of New Orleans – A Classic Arlo Guthrie Rendition
Posted on
Arlo Guthrie was born and bred a musician. The son of America’s most beloved singer, songwriter and philosopher, Woody Guthrie, he grew up among America’s most celebrated folk-roots musicians. Arlo learned something from everyone, developed his own musical style, and became a revered performer and political-social commentator. After nearly five decades on the music scene, he’s more relevant in today’s world than he ever was, putting on great shows with meaningful commentary for audiences lucky enough to see him live. Among the many familiar tunes we should expect to hear him play at Mariposa Folk Festival 2013 is his definitive rendition of Steve Goodman’s City of New Orleans. Here he is performing that classic song at the Americana Music Association Awards in the Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, Tennessee.

Tribute to Stompin’ Tom Connors with Bidiniband and Friends

Bidiniband explores Canadian themes, so it is only natural that the group would lead a tribute to the late Stompin’ Tom Connors, himself a quintessential Canadian musician. Stompin’ Tom was a prolific and well-known country and folk singer and songwriter who expressed his dedication to Canada through music. He wrote more than 300 songs, released four dozen albums, played innumerable shows, and is immortalized by songs that are part of the Canadian cultural landscape such as Sudbury Saturday Night, Bud the Spud and The Hockey Song. Bidiniband will be joined by guest artists in honouring the memory of Stompin’ Tom.

Children’s entertainer, Dickie Bird, has an ample supply of up-beat music, a suitcase full of magic tricks, and amazing gizmos like his bubble machine. His performances are fast-paced fun with singalongs, action songs, magic tricks, the Everybody Joins In Jug Band, and many opportunities for audience participation. His puppet pal, Doug the Wug, also makes an appearance. Dickie Bird’s show has been described by critics as “Personable, enthusiastic, talented, appealing” and “The perfect combination of music, magic and fun!” Dickie Bird is also known as Richard Knechtel. You can see him perform in that incarnation at the festival as half of the duo, Knechtel & McLean.

Some musical acts get long in the tooth. Some are famous for their break-ups. Some are corporate automatons churning out the ‘hits’. Some are awkward pairings in duets conjured by record company executives. Others, like Knechtel and McLean, are the real deal. Richard Knechtel is a former festival artistic director and respected singer songwriter. Rob McLean is a music director and writer/producer. Two talented guys pondering their next move, they could have banded together to rob liquor stores. Instead, they chose the honest path of working musicians. Between them, these guys have thousands of hours of stage time, countless songs and two jokes. It all adds up to a truly wonderful audience experience.

The Toronto Morris Men’s Dance Troupe to Descend on Mariposa
Posted on
Traditional morris dancing is usually associated with seasonal celebrations such as the arrival of spring or the turn of the year. Its origins are believed to date before 1400’s, although its precise history is not known in the absence of documentation of the pastimes of common folk. The Toronto Morris Men has been presenting this exuberant and visually exciting dance form since 1985. They see their dance as an expression of the joy of being alive, of being here now. They also love to sing, and have a repertoire that reflects a zest for good company and good sustenance.

Nicholas Keays and the North River to Make Their Festival Debut at Mariposa
Posted on
After he moved on from a ten-year stint as the front man of a touring rock band, Nicholas Keays spent time writing and stockpiling a bunch of great songs for a rainy day. When it came time to make his next move, he went in a new direction, joining Justin Rich and Jason Turner to form Nicholas Keays and the North River. The trio has crafted a stripped down, harmony filled, sound that is gracefully carried by a standup bass, acoustic guitar, banjo, and a kick drum fashioned out of an old suitcase. They play tunes of home and family that are hook-filled, simple, and of the foot stompin’ variety.
