City of Orillia

The Mariposa Folk Festival takes place in Orillia, Ontario. It’s a town that retains its charming character as described in the famous novella, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Townpublished in 1912 by Canadian humourist, Stephen Leacock. Leacock based his little town on Orillia and called it Mariposa, which is where one of Canada’s longest running folk festivals got its name. The Stephen Leacock Home Museum is a National Historic Site, and only a few minutes stroll from Mariposa Folk Festival along the Gordon Lightfoot Trail.

Orillia’s historic and charming main street has lots of shops, restaurants and other things to discover. The city’s waterfront has an extensive lakeshore boardwalk, parks, beaches, several playgrounds, an outdoor theatre, a touring ferry, and a children’s train.

The Lightfoot trail, named after Orillian, Gordon Lightfoot, is part of the TransCanada Trail and winds through Orillia. The trail is close to the waterfront, and is a great place to stroll, relax and unwind.

In the region around Orillia, known as Huronia and named after the Huron Nation, there are many wonderful sites and attractions that will keep you and your family enthralled:

Southern Georgian Bay & Lake Simcoe Region

Discover the unrivalled beauty and diversity of this gateway to the picturesque 30,000 Islands – a necklace of gems set in a water playground. Take an enchanting boat cruise on crystal-clear waters. Play among dramatic dunes and build your own sandcastles on the world’s longest freshwater beach. Be wowed by astounding rock formations sculpted thousands of years ago by receding glaciers. Wander through wetlands where songs of rare bird species are heard every day.

This is lake country

Though Lake Country’s assets abound, none are more perfect than its lakes, rivers, and streams. The water sports are out of this world. In fact, some of the best boating in Canada can be found here, as lake country is located on the Trent-Severn Waterway. This provides access to beautiful Georgian Bay at one end, and Lake Ontario at the other end.
