georgeElliotClarkePoet, playwright and literary critic, George Elliott Clarke is a seventh-generation Canadian of African-American and Mi’kmaq Amerindian heritage.

He has been instrumental in promoting the work of writers of African descent, especially those of Nova Scotia.

Clarke has published in a variety of genres including verse collections, verse-novel, verse play, and screenplay for feature film.

He coined the term ‘Africadian’ to identify the Black culture of Atlantic Canada; has won many prestigious awards and critical recognitions; and is Toronto’s Poet Laureate.

Clarke is also a dynamic spoken word performer, delivering rich and poignant verse that is both thought-provoking and highly entertaining.
